Academy Riders

***i do not own these pictures***

What is Academy Saddleseat?

Academy:
The Academy section of riding is for riders that haven’t shown much before. The horses in this division can be any breed but are generally saddlebreds. The horses do not have any shoe restrictions or tack restrictions. Schooling aids (ex. german\running martingale) are permitted, as well as full bridles. Horses can wear leg wraps as well. The only rule the horse must follow, is he must be an active participant in a lesson program. However, the rider is judged more so than the horse in all divisions.

The difference from all other divisions is that the rider does not show in a full suit. He\She is required to wear jodhpurs, boots, a button down blouse, tie, and a vest. Helmets are generally required for lead line and exhibitors 10 and under, but it varies by show. If the rider chooses not to wear a helmet, no hats such as derbies are permitted.

Common Academy divisions include:
17 & Under Performance Walk & Trot
17 & Under Equitation Walk & Trot
17 & Under Performance Walk, Trot, Canter
17 & Under Equitation Walk, Trot, Canter
18 & Over Under Performance Walk & Trot
18 & Over Equitation Walk & Trot
18 & Over Performance Walk, Trot, Canter
18 & Over Equitation Walk, Trot, Canter
Leadline (varying age requirements)
Leadline cannot cross enter into any other division.

A rider is no longer eligible for the walk and trot division if said rider has cantered in any other class, at any other horse show.

Any rider is allowed to remain in the academy division as long as he\she chooses, but they are no longer eligible after showing in a full suit at any show, in any division.

The performance division is judged more on the rider than the horse, on how the exhibitor shows the horse to the best of his\her ability.

The equitation division is judged on basic hand, seat, and leg position, with extra attention towards quiet hands, and a light seat.
